ABSTRACT

Despite the importance of pesticides in crops; its use and improper handling generates risks for human health and environmental health. These problems increase due to the systematic exposure to these chemical agents without taking into account the minimum personal protective equipment; for this reason, workers involved in mixing, loading, transporting and applying pesticides receive the highest exposure due to the nature of their work and are the group at greatest risk of presenting acute poisoning and long-term effects. Occupational exposure to pesticides is of central importance as it has a direct impact on health and indirectly on the state's economy, likewise, its evaluation is overshadowed by the technical difficulty and the high expertise necessary to identify exposure to substances and mixtures, thus the fluorescent tracers technique was used for the semi-quantitative identification of pesticides; this technique allows those involved in pesticide handling to see regions of their body that were in contact with the pesticide and thereby identify the risk posed by the inappropriate or null use of personal protection material. The implementation of the technique was carried out through training workshops with workers involved in the application of pesticides in the sugarcane crop where a task of preparation and application of pesticides was simulated using distilled water and the fluorescent tracer Tinopal CBS-X .
