RESUMO

Esta pesquisa tem como escopo compreender a Geografia da Religião e o Espaço do Sagrado na dinâmica das diferentes manifestações do cristianismo contemporâneo, frente ao crescimento das igrejas protestantes. Para isso, se deu prioridade para a análise da espiritualidade do Opus Dei, sendo assim, fez-se necessário construir um histórico sobre o surgimento da doutrina romana e sua disseminação até os dias de hoje. Além disso, objetiva-se ainda promover a discussão geográfica ao identificar as possíveis causas do declínio do catolicismo no Brasil, bem como analisar a perda de fiéis e território da Igreja Católica em Uberlândia-MG, mais especificamente nos bairros Fundinho e Morumbi, que foram escolhidos pelo contraste social apresentado por distintas realidades sociais, e também de ordenamento territorial de paisagens contrastantes. Promover a discussão geográfica sobre o sagrado em suas distintas manifestações no meio cristão significa integrar à Ciência Geográfica um olhar para aquilo que está para além do visível. Para entender a evolução da civilização ocidental faz-se necessária uma abordagem sensível sobre a sua espacialidade religiosa que se manifesta concretamente no território transformando a paisagem do lugar de forma contínua no tempo. Portanto, um estudo que busca contribuir para a difusão de uma abordagem geográfica cultural que destaca as práticas religiosas do homem cristão contemporâneo - que é capaz de reproduzir diferentes espacialidades.

DOMINE UT SIT! GEOGRAPHY AND SPACE OF THE SACRED: THE PRESENCE OF OPUS DEI IN THE CONTEMPORARY ERA OF PROTESTANT PROGRESS

ABSTRACT 

This research aims to understand the Geography of Religion and the Space of the Sacred in the dynamics of the different manifestations of contemporary Christianity, in the face of the growth of Protestant churches. For this, priority was given to the analysis of Opus Dei's spirituality and thus it was necessary to build a history of the emergence of Roman doctrine and its dissemination to the present day. In addition, it aims to promote geographical discussion by identifying the possible causes of the decline of Catholicism in Brazil, as well as to analyze the loss of faithful and territory of the Catholic Church in Uberlândia-MG, more specifically in the neighborhoods of Fundinho and Morumbi, which were chosen for the social contrast presented by different social realities, and also for the territorial planning of contrasting landscapes. Promoting the geographic discussion about the sacred in its different manifestations in the Christian milieu means integrating to Geographic Science a look at what is beyond the visible. In order to understand the evolution of Western civilization, it is necessary to take a sensitive approach to its religious spatiality, which is manifested concretely in the territory, transforming the landscape of the place continuously in time. Therefore, a study that seeks to contribute to the diffusion of a cultural geographic approach that highlights the religious practices of contemporary Christian man - who is capable of reproducing different spatialities.
