John F. Muth conocido como "el padre de las expectativas racionales" nació en Chicago en 1930. Estudió ingeniería eléctrica en la Washington University y se graduó en la GSIA del Carnegie Institute of Technology (ahora Carnegie-Mellon University). En 1962 obtuvo el Ph. D. en Economía Matemática.
Ha sido profesor en la University of Chicago, en la Cowles Foundation de la Yale University, en la Carnegie-Mellon University, en la Michigan State University y en la Indiana University.
Muth escribió varios artículos desarrollando la hipótesis de las expectativas racionales. Según opina su biógrafa Esther-Mirjam Sent, en realidad el no creía en la validez microeconómica de esa teoría sino que estaba interesado en sus relaciones con la "racionalidad limitada".
Sus ideas fueron desarrolladas por Robert E. Lucas que fue premiado con el Nobel en 1955.

Falleció el 23 de octubre de 2005 en su casa de Key West Florida, en esos momentos azotada por el huracán Wilma.
