ABSTRACT:

The work was done in two different towns of Patagonia Austral (Argentina): 28 de Noviembre and Río Gallegos. They both possess a wealthy flora and fauna, with species of interest to promote ornithological tourism. Looking for the improvement of the mentioned activity, we identified key species that could give an identity to each place. Then, we determined the peculiarities of each site, and identified the places for bird watching. The selection of the watching sites was decided trough a series of criteria (frequency of appearance and proximity of the birds, accessibility to the place, quality of the landscape). The main attraction selected to promote 28 de Noviembre was the Andean Condor, while the chosen for Río Gallegos were the shorebirds. In coordination with the local government of each town, we created two Natural Urban Reserves, several paths for the visitors, a condor watching point and an Environmental Interpretation Centre, were created. The satisfactory fulfillment of these activities reveals an interesting growth perspective for the future, starting from the improvement of the touristic and recreational offerings, in areas with valuable natural resources.
