ABSTRACT:

This paper studies the relationship between the extensive cattle breeding model and the destruction of the forest in the Republic of Panama during the period 1950-2000. The forest which has been reduced by 24% represents the dependent variable. The expansion of the cattle extensive model represents the independent variable and it manifests itself in the amount of cultivated graze land (the land dedicated to grazing increased 178%) and the consequent increment of livestock (increased 168%). The combination of these two elements generates and index of animal workload at national level.

The graze land logic, product of the grazing culture and the logic of the capital have at its base the acquisition of new pasture fields. Today, the expansion of the extensive cattle model has reached its limit. This logic is at a crisis given that the geographic spaces are finite and its uses conflict with other human activities.

In the early nineties the cattle activity entered an inflection, before the rate of profits, the increase of environmental standards and the creation of national parks, that made necessary the production of meat, milk and leather in smaller spaces, with more technology or the reorganization of biotic and abiotic factors that intervene in the productive process.
